This blog will function as a writing component of the Fall 2009 English 487 course, "Apocalypse: Literature & Theory" at Loyola University New Orleans.
On this blog each student will be responsible for posting "small apocalypses" (borrowing the phrase from Lucy Corin) over the course of the semester, as well as responding the theoretical readings with the aim of making connections between critical theory and apocalyptic thinking. How does theory participate in apocalyptic rhetoric? In what ways does theory give us tools to critique apocalypticism? The "small apocalypses" should consist of quotidian discoveries, mundane objects, and unexpected encounters that you have with apocalyptic rhetoric or imagery in our day-to-day lives. Part of the point of this course is to become sensitized to how, where, when apocalypticism punctures the otherwise ‘normal’ surface of everyday life—or, when apocalyptic ideas and visions start to become, themselves, normal.
