On Mohatny

Mohanty presents a great understanding of feminism in the world today while giving an eye opening essay about the oppression of women today.  It is through Mohanty’s eyes that women are victims of male violence, universal dependants, and married women being victims of the colonial process.  Women are victims of male violence because “male sexual politics share the same political goal: to assume female dependence and subservience by any and all means.”  It becomes apparent that women are seen as universal dependants because as Mohanty states that “women are constituted as a group via dependency relationship vis-à-vis men who are implicitly held responsible for these relationships.”  Not only does Mohanty present women as dependant and victims of male violence, but also married women being victims of the colonial process.  According to Mohanty, married women are victims because “that in merely describing the STRUCTURE of the marriage contract, the situation of women is exposed.”

  1. Just the sake of a woman taking the name of her husband shows the lack of power women have in our society. Married women, although they are not seen as such, have to give a great deal of their social power in order to marry someone. Meaning a great deal is given away from women. Why at a wedding do I see the bride and not the groom being given away to marriage? People often defend their values simply based on the notion of tradition. But tradition of mistreatment must no longer last. If a person's traditions are to rape and steal then we need to change that person's values. The same is for women in marriage. We need equality in marriage.
